Latvian Popular Front is 25
October 8, 2013, marks 25 years since the first congress of the Latvian Popular Front, a political force behind Latvia regaining its independence. To mark the occasion, the Latvian government supported various activities that remind of the vital role of the Popular Front.
A documentary by Askolds Saulītis and Edgars Engīzers „The Anthology of the Awakening” was premiered on October 5 alongside the opening of a grand photo exhibition on the Dome Square in Rīga.
On October 7, 1988, a mass public rally was held in Rīga under the auspices of the emerging Latvian Popular Front. Its slogan is „For a lawful state”. The Latvian Popular Front (LPF) was established on October 8 and attracted a membership of several hundred thousand people. It became the guiding force toward the restoration of Latvian independence.

Kristaps Epners – The Run
The exhibition is centred around a particular group of works – video recordings and images. Other works are also displayed. One of the recordings shows an artist running a marathon in city streets. In a different one the artist has documented his preparation period with a camera attached to his head. The images are screenshots from video materials. These are images of sceneries that the runner views during the trainings. The video material has undergone only the most necessary manipulations, avoiding editing or special framing and image processing. Therefore the materials are several hours of even days long. The viewer has a chance to connect to the artist-athlete’s experience through various episodes.

Read More »

Aija Bley “Later”
Photographer Aija Bley in her series „Later,” is focusing on representations of elder people’s lives by documenting them in their own apartments. „Many years ago I met an elder lady in my Riga apartment building’s stairway. She seemed interesting to me and I asked if I might take a picture of her. She liked my idea about taking pictures in the interior. So we agreed that I would go to her place sometime later. But that „later” never happened because old lady died all of a sudden. This event made me think about the life „later” as well as about how meaningful this world is. I take it that someday I will also become old, but it really seems so far from now. To be honest, the characters of my series spend most of their lives in these apartments. I … Read More »

Reinis Hofmanis – Stones
Stones / 2011
In series “Stones” Hofmanis has drawn attention to locations in the Strasburg city environment, which have been marked with compositions made of stones. As stated by the photographer, stones were one of the first elements in Strasbourg that caught his eye. The seemingly ordinary objects attract attention with the carefully planned compositions and consistency in size so in harmony with the urban space in the suburbs of the city. Strasbourg is one of the European cities, where stone layers are regulated by the public order policy. To some degree, the stones serve as fortification elements that protect the empty sections of land from the travellers’ caravans and unauthorized car parking. A few centuries ago it was a wall, in the age of democracy – stones that at the home of the European Union Parliament take care of safety, … Read More »
